Have Younger New Drivers? Amazing Ways To Actually Save Money

By September 17, 2025October 9th, 2025No Comments

Getting your driver’s license is a big milestone—it means freedom, independence, and the ability to go where you want, when you want. But, let’s cut to the chase, how do you avoid paying ridiculously expensive insurance premiums now and forever?

Whether you’re a teen driver, a college student, or someone who’s just getting behind the wheel for the first time, understanding how car insurance works—and how to get the best deal—is essential. Here’s what new drivers (and their families) need to know.

đźš— Why Do New Drivers Pay More for Insurance?

Insurance companies set rates based on risk—and statistically, new drivers are more likely to be involved in accidents, especially in their first year on the road.

Amazingly, the industry used to premium-rate young Males much higher than Females, since young Males tended to have “higher costing accidents less frequently” than their Female counterparts that tended to have “lower costing accidents more frequently” than Males.

Don’t worry, though—rates usually decrease over time as you gain experience and maintain a clean driving record, and the above rating theories from yesteryear will not always continue in the future!

🛡️ What Type of Coverage Do You Need?

Here’s a breakdown of common Auto Insurance:

  • Liability Insurance: Covers damage you cause to OTHERS in an accident; Injury and Property Damages.

  • Collision Insurance: Covers damage to YOUR CAR after a crash.

  • Comprehensive Insurance: Covers damage to YOUR CAR for Glass Breakage, Theft, Animals, Trees…

  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage: Protects YOU because typically the other AY FAULT driver has little or no insurance.

  • Umbrella (Excess Liability) Insurance: A separate policy that’s a Must-Have for those with kids and assets to protect.

Pro Tip: If you’re driving an older car, you might be able to skip Collision coverage to save money, but keep Comprehensive based on the premium.

đź’¸ How to Save Money on Car Insurance as a New Driver (many Pro Tips here):

Car insurance is expensive, but here are some usual ways to keep costs down:

  1. Keep your kid on the Family policy: Adding a teen to a parent’s existing policy is usually cheaper than getting a separate policy; and yes, we all want to get them started on their own and teach responsibility, but time has taught us that making them pay more for insurance is just silliness.

  2. Drive Safely with Your Kids: The best teacher shows you the ways, and being a great parent driver helps; also putting the new young driver behind the wheel in unfamiliar scenarios, such as rain, traffic, snow (be careful), or early in the morning, can save them from last minute decisions they’re unfamiliar with.

  3. Take Defensive Driving Course(s): Many insurers offer discounts if you complete an approved course (see The Hanover Insurance program below).

  4. Become comfortable with new Technology: Everyone is being tracked these days, your kids, the government, your spouse, aliens, so why not let the insurance company pay you for your driving data?

  5. Get & keep Good Grades: Some companies offer “good student” or “A/B” discounts for students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

  6. Get a quality, safe, used vehicle: Obviously sports cars and high-performance vehicles cost more to insure; look for late model and/or off-lease vehicles, or those that are less than $6,000 – $8,000 in value, then choose to not pay for Collision coverage, if too pricey.

  7. Contact our Professionally Trained Staff: Contacting our office with several vehicle options that you have in mind is also common practice and can help minimize premium increases.

And finally, one of the best ways to save insurance premium out there, is The Hanover Insurance SafeTeen Program:

The Hanover SafeTeen is a group of programs that educate a new teen driver and help give parents peace of mind while their teens are on the road. Both parents and their new driver can benefit from the safety, education, rewards and savings Hanover SafeTeen offers for responsible driving.

The basics: Educate, Coach, Protect…

Educate with our Teen Driver Safety Course

Sign up for the program with Del Duke Insurance Group by asking for the TeenSMART® driver safety program. The discount is added to your policy, and you will be emailed a link to access the online course on your computer.

  1. The course is approximately six to eight hours long and can be completed at your teen’s own pace.

  2. At the end of the training, your teen will need to successfully pass the final exam in order to receive their certification. This provides confirmation of completion for your representative at Del Duke Insurance Group.

  3. Your teen needs to successfully complete the program within 60 days, or the discount will be removed from the policy.

Coach with our Teen Driver mobile app

This app tracks a teen’s driving habits and provides an overall score based on distracted driving, speed, hard braking and more.

  1. Sign up for the SmartPath mobile app through Del Duke Insurance Group.

  2. The discount is added to your policy. You will get an email directing them to sign up for My Hanover Policy.

  3. Select “SmartPath” on the left-hand side of My Hanover Policy. Under “SmartPath”, select “Drivers & Enrollment”.

  4. You’ll see drivers associated with your auto policy. Select your teen and enter their cell phone number to invite them to download the SmartPath app on their phone. Your teen will be sent a text with a link to download the app.

  5. Tracking begins once the location option is activated on your teen’s phone.

  6. You will get a dashboard view of all driving activities on My Hanover Policy.

  7. The teen’s driving behavior is calculated based on a number of factors, including hard braking, time of day, speeding and distraction and results in an overall driving score.

  8. If the teen earns a green overall driving score, they will receive Amazon rewards via email.

Protect with our SafeTeen deductible option

When the Hanover SafeTeen deductible is added to vehicles that aren’t usually driven by a teen, you can save money and protect your vehicles.

  1. Speak with Del Duke Insurance Group about the ParentChoice deductible option.

  2. Select the vehicles that your teen won’t frequently drive* and add the ParentChoice deductible of $2,500 on those vehicles.

  3. The additional $2,500 deductible is applied to the comprehensive and collision deductible in the event of a loss on the selected vehicles only when driven by a teen driver.

âś… Final Tips for First-Time Drivers

  • Always read the policy carefully before buying.

  • Don’t choose the cheapest option just to save money—make sure you’re adequately covered.

  • Ask questions! Insurance agents can explain the coverage in plain language.

  • Revisit your policy each year—your needs and rates may change.

Conclusion

Car insurance might not be the most exciting part of becoming a driver, but it’s one of the most important. By understanding your options and taking smart steps to reduce costs, you’ll set yourself up for a safe, affordable start behind the wheel.

Happy driving—and stay safe out there!
